Orlando VA Pioneers New Way of Treating PTSD

by | Jul 18, 2023 | Veterans Disability Benefits |

In an attempt to better treat PTSD, the Orlando VA Medical Center is pioneering the use of virtual care combined with specialized treatment to treat high risk Veterans. This cutting edge approach combines the use of technology allowing Veterans to receive treatment remotely, as well as the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy. A type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy teaches Veterans to focus on the present allowing them to slow down and focus on the use of healthy coping skills when in distress and controlling negative thoughts. The Veteran is also taught skills to manage suicidality, emotions, stress, and relationships in order to be better able to confront trauma.

The use of virtual care to provide healthcare to patients unable or unwilling to meet in person is nothing new; however, it’s the Orlando VA Medical Centers extensive use of technology, including telemedicine, as part of an integrated treatment program that is unique. This allows Veterans to receive treatment that would otherwise be unavailable due to their location, PTSD symptoms, or access to transportation to not only meet one-on-one with their therapist, but to also take part in group therapy. It also allows Veterans to receive urgent mental health care almost immediately without having to go to a VA Medical Center. In order to ensure that the program remains at the forefront of PTSD treatment, the Orlando VA is working with local universities and healthcare institutions as well as taking part in clinical trials and medical studies to develop more effective treatments and technology. The treatments and technology being developed with the help of the Orlando VA will be used to improve the treatment of PTSD throughout the VA with the hopes of improving not only the quality of PTSD care, but also ensuring that it is available to the Veterans who need it.
