Many Veterans who were exposed to burn pits and sand storms are impacted by Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Although GERD is not on VA’s presumptive list, it should be. While the relationship between exposure to burn pits and sand storms to GERD has not been well studied, and there is limited evidence of a causal relationship, the VA is looking at this. Studies from the National Institute of Health are looking at this relationship.
Veterans with exposure history show an increased rate of GERD. The results of one study that has been done, A Pilot Study of Airborne Hazards and Other Toxic Exposures in Iraq War Veterans. Chelsey Possion et al. J Environ Res Public Health. 2020., reports that Veteran’s pre and post deployment incidence of GERD rose from 6% to 34.5%. This shows a clear relationship between exposure to burn pits and sand storms and GERD.
