Social Security Resources Available for Those with Limited English Proficiency

by | Jul 6, 2023 | Social Security Disability |

The Social Security Administration is making great strides to provide access to its programs for those with limited English proficiency. Social Security has several resources available to help those with limited English proficiency navigate their various programs and understand the benefits available.

Benefit information is available in Spanish online here. Social Security also offers free interpreter services by telephone and in person for more than 200 languages. To access these services, one should call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local Social Security office and ask for an interpreter in your preferred language. After dialing the above mentioned number, a Social Security representative will contact an interpreter to help with the call. If your business cannot be handled over the phone, Social Security will make an appointment for you at the Social Security office where an interpreter will be available to help.

Similarly, Social Security also offers publications concerning Social Security benefits such as disability, retirement, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in more than 12 language, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.  These publications can be viewed here.
