I am often asked by clients who have recently been approved for Social Security disability when they will receive their monthly benefit check from Social Security. The schedule of Social Security benefit payments depends on what type of claim for which you are receiving benefits as well as when your birthday fall in the month.
For those receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits, the date during the month when you will receive your payment is based on where your birthday falls in the month. If you were born between the 1st of the month and the 10th, you will receive your Social Security benefits on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. If you were born between the 11th and the 20th, you will receive your benefits on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. If you were born between the 21st and the 31st, you will receive your benefits on the 4th Wednesday of every month.
Supplemental Security Income or SSI is paid on the 1st day of the month. However, when the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a federal holiday, you will receive SSI on the last business day before the first day of the month. This may lead to sometimes getting 2 SSI payments in 1 month. For example, April 1, 2023 falls on a Saturday. Therefore, SSI payments will be issued on March 31, 2023, the last business day before the first day of the month. Therefore, for the month of March of 2023, SSI recipients will receive an SSI payment on March 1st and then will receive their April payment on March 31st.
A notable exception is for those receive both Social Security and SSI. If you receive both Social Security and SSI, your SSI payment will be paid on the 1st of the month and your Social Security payment will be paid on the 3rd of the month. Similarly, if you began receiving Social Security before May of 1997, your payment will be paid on the 3rd of the month. Social Security has issued a calendar with the schedule of Social Security benefit payments for 2023. You can view the calendar here.
