VA Proposes to Close and Rebuild VA Medical Centers and Construct New Facilities in Massive Overhaul

The Department of Veterans Affairs has come forward with a new infrastructure plan to revamp the VA Health Administration. However, this newly proposed plan comes with the permanent closings of dozens of VA Hospitals and Outpatient Clinics as well as the complete reconstruction of some existing VA medical facilities. Notably, the proposed plan would include 35 facilities in 21 different cities being permanently closed or completely reconstructed. Additionally, 17 more facilities will be closed permanently in 12 states.

The total cost of the VA overhaul is $2 trillion and VA hopes that this plan will bring much needed restructuring and rejuvenation to the VA Health Administration. The proposal does not just include closures. In fact, 14 new major hospitals will be built and 140 multi-specialty outpatient clinics will be built should the proposal make its way successfully through Congress.

VA facilities in the southeast that will be impacted include closures in Dublin, Georgia and Alexandria, Virginia. Additionally, Huntsville will receive a newly constructed facility and the VA medical center in Tuskegee will be rebuilt under this proposed plan. Because this plan has not yet received congressional approval it could take years to see this take shape or be put in to action, but VA feels as though such an overhaul is needed at this time.
