Stop the Wait!

by | Feb 16, 2022 | In The Community, Social Security Disability |

If you are disabled and are finally awarded your benefits, did you know that under the Social Security Disability Insurance benefits program (SSDI), you will have a waiting period?

The waiting period includes a five (5) full month waiting period from your onset of disability before Social Security will begin paying you any monthly benefits or calculating your back pay for benefits. Additionally, you will have a 24-month waiting period to get access to Medicare beginning after the 5-month waiting period. Essentially, you are eligible for Medicare after waiting 29 months.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) have introduced legislation to eliminate the waiting period for SSDI and provide immediate access to Medicare for those disabled beneficiaries who cannot get or afford other health insurance. We are asking you to urge your Senators and Representatives to cosponsor these bills. To participate in this campaign:

SSDI is the program you pay into as you work. There is no waiting period for Supplemental Security Income (Title 16/SSI) claims and no waiting period for Medicaid beneficiaries. Text now to show our Senators and Representatives the waiting needs to STOP! You will receive a text message with a link to enter your name and address. This will automatically populate emails to the appropriate Senators and Representatives in your area. Showing your support will take only 1-2 minutes and will potentially help thousands.

If you have filed for Social Security disability benefits, please call one of the experienced disability representatives at Gardberg & Kemmerly, P.C. today at 251-343-1111 for a free consultation. Gardberg & Kemmerly specialize in helping the injured and disabled.
