AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR VETERANS IN MOBILE, ALABAMA

On Behalf of | Jun 15, 2021 | Blog, COVID-19, In The Community, Veterans' Issues |

Due to COVID, last year was hard on renters and Veterans are no exception. The number of available rentals has shrunk, rents have increased, and even those Veterans who had stable housing are now finding themselves struggling to pay their rent and may be facing eviction. In the face of these rising difficulties, various private and governmental agencies have stepped up to assist our Veterans find housing and much needed support and services.

One such organization is the Volunteers of America Southeast (VOA), a national non-profit who has partnered with the U.S. Veterans Administration, to run a transitional housing community in Mobile, Alabama, called Eagle’s Landing. Providing temporary housing to Veterans who have served in the active military and who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, the VOA also offers services to assist Veterans transition back into civilian life, including counseling as related to housing, financial management, vocation, education, and daily living skills. Thanks to additional funding, the VOA has recently expanded to offer Veterans housing outside of the Eagle’s Landing community.

Another program currently assisting renters of all types is the Mobile County Treasury Emergency Rental and Utility Assistance (TERA) program, made possible because a $12 million dollar grant from the Federal Government. Providing up to fifteen months of rental assistance, including up to three months forward, as well as assistance with utilities, the program is working to keep renters in their homes, as well as assist them with their utilities.

For more information regarding the Eagle’s Landing or any of the VOA’s other programs, VOA Southeast may be contacted at 800-859-4431. For information on the TERA program, you may call 855-209-4970.
