Gardberg and Kemmerly Welcomes Lewis Carter to the Firm

My name is Lewis Carter and I am excited to introduce myself as the newest member of Gardberg and Kemmerly, where I will be working as part of the Veterans’ Disability team. For the past several years, I have been working as a criminal defense attorney and representing tenants faced with eviction. During that time, I was alarmed by the number of Veterans I represented.  Too often, they were struggling to find a place to live, medical treatment, or access to benefits they had earned as a result of their service. I am honored to be given the chance to help Veterans in a way that will have a lasting impact on their lives.

Attending the University of West Florida, I studied history, focusing on the military and those who served in it. After graduating and deciding to pursue a legal career, I attended Savannah Law School. While in law school I interned with Legal Services Alabama, where I helped provide legal aid to the underserved, and PetersonDelleCave, where I assisted victims of police misconduct. When I was admitted to practice law in Alabama in 2018, I opened a solo practice and began working with the South Alabama Volunteer Lawyers Program to assist low-income clients with bankruptcies. From there, I moved on to represent indigent defendants as a contract attorney with the City of Mobile.  In the latter half of 2020, I again worked with Legal Services Alabama, this time assisting tenants facing eviction as the result of the Covid pandemic.

My law career has been devoted to helping those who are often over-looked or underserved.  I look forward to applying the skills I have learned on behalf of our Veterans.
