The VA’s Specially Adapted Housing Program (SAH) provides grants to Veterans and service members with certain service-connected disabilities to buy or change a home to meet their needs. Created in 1948, the SAH program administers grants to Veterans with certain severe service-connected conditions such as loss of limb or blindness. The grant can be used by the Veteran to build a permanent home or adapt their current home in order for the the home to be more accessible to the Veteran.
To qualify for the SAH program the Veteran must have one of the following:
- The loss, or loss of use, of more than one limb
- The loss, or loss of use, of a lower leg along with the residuals (lasting effects) of an organic (natural) disease or injury
- Blindness in both eyes (with 20/200 visual acuity or less)
- Certain severe burns
- The loss, or loss of use, of one lower extremity (foot or leg) after September 11, 2001, which makes it so you can’t balance or walk without the help of braces, crutches, canes, or a wheelchair
Once the Veteran qualifies for the grant, the Veteran can get up to $121,812 in 2025. The SAH program can also be used by Veterans and service members living internationally. The VA has stated that since the SAH program inception 77 years ago, more than 53,500 SAH grants have been awarded totaling $2.2 billion dollars.
