Things to know when considering working while on disability

by | Aug 2, 2018 | Social Security Disability |

Social Security disability benefits can be a vital lifeline for many disabled individuals in Alabama. Therefore, those receiving disability benefits may have concerns associated with continued receipt of their benefits if they are considering the option of trying to return to work. For disability recipients in that situation, it is important that they are familiar with the programs and options available to them through the Social Security Administration.

It is useful to keep in mind that the Social Security Administration offers incentives to help disabled individuals test the feasibility of returning to work, while possibly retaining their benefits. Work incentives can include continued cash benefits while the disabled individual is working, continued medical care while the disabled individual is working and resources available to help with education, training and vocational rehabilitation.

In addition, the Social Security Administration’s Ticket to Work program can help with vocational rehabilitation, job training, job referrals and it provides other employment-related supports that recipients of disability benefits who are considering returning to the workplace may consider helpful. Disabled individuals considering returning to work should also be aware that if they do return to work and once again become unable to work due to their medical condition, they may be able to resume their SSD benefits.

Social Security disability benefits are an important resource for disabled individuals experiencing an inability to work due to a disabling medical condition. Different resources and options are available to disabled individuals, including Social Security disability benefits, which is why they should understand how the program works and the different options associated with it.
