Are veterans eligible for Social Security Disability benefits?

by | Apr 18, 2018 | Veterans' Issues |

Alabamians should always recognize and thank military veterans for their service. And, military members are allotted certain benefits, such as medical care, pension and other benefits not allotted to non-military members and their families. Sometimes, whether due to a military injury or other injury or illness, a veteran is no longer able to keep or attain gainful employment.

What do these veterans do, and who do they turn to? While the VA is going to do their best to care for them, there are other civilian programs available that could help a veteran get through financially when they are no longer able to work.

Social Security Disability benefits are available to those who have paid into Social Security through their wages, if they have a qualifying disability. According to the SSA, a disability is a physical or medical condition that has lasted, or can be expected to last, for a continuous period of not less than 12 months, or which is expected to result in a person’s death.

Veterans’ issues, like how to handle finances when suffering from a debilitating injury or illness are likely just one part of the equation. The responsibilities of everyday life, like caring for friends and family and other daily obligations can be made much harder by poor or failing health. Social Security Disability benefits can help to take some of that stress away.

Anyone interested in receiving Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits must apply and go through the process. There are several step in the process. Paperwork, interviews and other items are likely needed. Filling out the paperwork correctly is also a key to being granted benefits. But, getting the help of an experienced SSD benefits attorney can help.
