Social Security Scam Warning

The Social Security Administration is warning people against a new scam trying to defraud people out of their Social Security checks. A release from the Social Security Administration warns of calls coming from a 323 area code that claim to be from a Social Security Administration employee. This caller asks for personal information, such as name, birth date, Social Security numbers, and parents’ names. The caller informs the victim that they are eligible for an increase in their Social Security benefits for a 1.7% cost-of-living adjustment. The information given in this phone call will then be used to change the victim’s direct deposit, address, and phone information.

The Social Security Administration states that when they contact people by phone, they will not ask for personal information. You should never give out Social Security numbers or bank account information over the phone unless you are certain about who you are speaking with. If you have received a suspicious call from someone you believe to be impersonating the Social Security Administration, you should report it to the Office of the Inspector General. The Office of the Inspector General can be contacted online or by mail, fax, or phone. Their mailing address is:

P.O. Box 17785

Their fax number is 410-597-0118, and their telephone number is 1-800-269-0271, available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
