President Obama is set to sign a $16.3 billion bill benefitting veterans today. The bill is in response to reports of veterans dying while waiting for appointments with VA doctors while VA employees covered up those long wait times. This measure allows the Department of Veterans Affairs to hire thousands of doctors, nurses, and other medical and health professionals at the VA hospitals and outpatient clinics throughout the United States to more quickly serve veterans.

Furthermore, the bill devotes $10 billion in emergency spending over three years to pay private doctors to care for qualifying veterans who cannot get timely appointments at VA hospitals and outpatient clinics and for veterans who live more than 40 miles from a VA facility. The bill also pledges $1.3 billion to open 27 new VA outpatient clinics nationwide. Not only does the bill provide funds for ensuring that veterans are getting timely medical treatment with the VA, but the law also implements new employment rules which will make it easier to fire senior VA executives with poor performance and executives who have committed negligence.
