I applied and won. Now what happens?

When you file an appeal for Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits or Supplemental Security Income an initial determination is made whether you meet the requirements for disability. If you meet the requirements you will receive a Notice of Award that explains the amount of benefits you will receive.

Don’t let your guard down if you receive a Notice of Award. There might be two sentences within the Notice of Award that states Social Security is finding you disabled but starting at a different date than you alleged. If you do not appeal within 60 days then you are stuck with the onset date that Social Security chose. This can make a huge difference in the amount of benefits and also eligibility dates for Medicare.
