Talcum Powder

Talcum Powder

According to the Cancer Prevention Research Journal, Talcum powder based products used on a woman's genital area increases the risk of developing ovarian cancer during the woman's lifetime. Talc, a main ingredient in talcum powder, is a mineral that is composed of elements of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. It is then ground to make talcum powder which can be used to absorb moisture. Talcum powder is widely used in cosmetic products such as baby powder and adult powders to help keep skin dry and prevent rashes.

Research has shown that Talcum powder can cause cancer if the powder particles were to travel through the vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes to the ovary. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies the genital use of talc-based powder as a possible carcinogenic to humans. Several law suits have been initiated and successfully won against Johnson & Johnson for failure to warn consumers of the link between talcum powder products and ovarian cancer. Evidence has been presented at these trials to show that Johnson & Johnson had been aware of the link between talcum powder use in the genital areas and an increased risk of ovarian cancer for decades but did not warn the public or the consumers of their products.

If you, or a loved one, has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer after having used talcum powder, it may be to your benefit to speak with an attorney at Gardberg and Kemmerly to discuss any potential resource.
