When Are You Eligible For Special Monthly Compensation?

When Are You Eligible For Special Monthly Compensation?

Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) is a benefit established through statute that is paid in addition to the basic rates of compensation payable under the Schedule for Rating Disabilities. SMC is paid to compensate veterans for service connected disabilities that involve anatomical loss or loss of use, such as the loss of a hand or a foot, or impairment of the senses. While the basic rates of compensation are predicated on the average reduction in earning capacity, SMC benefits are meant to provide additional compensation based on noneconomic factors such as personal inconvenience, social inadaptability, or the profound nature of the disability.

The Veterans Benefits Manual mandates that the VA consider entitlement to SMC as an inferred issue. Meaning, VA adjudicators are obligated to consider entitlement to SMC in all decisions where the medical evidence indicates possible entitlement.

Special Monthly Compensation is payable above basic compensation rates. The basic levels of SMC provide entitlement to SMC for loss or loss of use, which is paid in addition to basic compensation rates. Housebound status and SMC based on need for regular aid and attendance may also be awarded in cases that merit such compensation.
