Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, even in a pandemic

by | Jul 24, 2020 | Firm News |

This year, I am the Chair for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Event. The Making Strides for Breast Cancer Board is comprised of people from all over South Alabama. Each of us have different jobs, different interests and different lifestyles. But what we do have in common is the drive to help in any way to find a cure for breast cancer. Many of us on the board have been personally touched by breast cancer – some of the board members are survivors, some of the board members are family members of a survivor, and some of the board members have lost loved ones to breast cancer. A huge part of finding a cure, is raising money for research and resources.

When I was given an opportunity to join the board of Making Strides for Breast Cancer last year, I knew WHY I wanted to be involved. My paternal grandmother was diagnosed with, fought, and defeated breast cancer. I wanted to be involved to honor her and her fight. I am also very fortunate to know Christine Cumbie of our very own Gardberg & Kemmerly family. Christine has won her fight against breast cancer and was one of last year’s Portraits of Hope.

This year’s Making Strides event will look very different from past year’s events. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the mandates prohibiting large crowds from gathering, we will have an incredibly fun, and interesting, event, highlighting the fight against breast cancer, as well as our very brave survivors! The national kick-off on August 11 will be virtual, as will the South Alabama kickoff that will be held on August 26. We will announce the plans for the main event, which will be on October 31, 2020!!

Just because COVID-19 is a threat, does not mean that cancer has stopped attacking. We need all the help we can get to raise money for our Making Strides event this year. There are multiple ways to participate – create and lead a team of your own, enjoy the event with us, volunteer or be a sponsor. Go to https://secure.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=97694&pg=informational&sid=210546&name=event-details to learn about the event, create a team and get involved.

While a lot of work by the Board goes into putting this event together, the event would not happen without the teams, fundraisers and sponsors. I encourage everyone to get involved in this fight against breast cancer and I hope to see you on October 31, 2020!
