VA Using Technology to Speed Mail Processing Times

by | Nov 2, 2020 | Veterans Disability Benefits, Veterans' Issues |

The Veterans Benefits Administration (“VBA”) has long been known for inefficiency and delay in their processing of claims, appeals, and correspondence from Veterans. VBA currently processes mail manually when it is submitted to VA for association with claims and appeals files. However, now VBA is beginning to use Artificial Intelligence to sort mail more quickly and have it associated with claims more efficiently.

VBA’s new software digitally reads the contents of the Veterans’ correspondence and automatically routes the documents to be associated with the appropriate files by VA workers who are working on those specific files. VA says the move to AI mail sorting shows their efforts to be the emphasis on the Veteran and the customer service being provided to them. VA currently processes 550,000 pieces of mail per month from Veterans, surviving spouses, service agencies, attorneys, and claims agents. VA hopes that this new technology will reduce processing times from 10 days to 1 day and significantly streamline the VA claims process.
