How does going back to work impact SSD benefits?

Our readers in Alabama probably know how hard it is to be approved for Social Security Disability benefits. The Social Security Administration requires meticulous details in any application for SSD benefits, and many initial applications are denied. So, once someone has been approved for benefits, they don't want to think about what might happen if these benefits stop.

However, some people who are approved for SSD benefits are actually able to return to the workforce, as they recover from whatever injury or illness caused them to become disabled and unable to work in the first place. So, how does going back to work impact Social Security Disability benefits?

Well, as a recent news article noted, the Social Security Administration has a special program to help individuals transition back to the workforce, known as "Ticket to Work." Through this program, individuals who receive SSD benefits are able to "test the waters" of returning to the workforce before their Social Security Disability benefits are rescinded. For a certain amount of time, a recipient can work and still receive full SSD benefits. If going back to work doesn't work out, the SSD benefits will continue. However, if the individual is able to return to work and earn enough income, that individual will be able to transition from receiving SSD benefits.

As with all government programs, there are many nuances to the Social Security Administration's Ticket to Work program. Any Alabama residents who want to learn more about the program should be sure to protect their legal options.
