Qualifying for Social Security Disability benefits for illnesses

by | Aug 29, 2019 | Social Security Disability Benefits For Illness |

Most of our readers in Alabama know that Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits are available to people who are no longer able to work due to some type of debilitating injury or illness that has occurred in their lives. However, many people do not know the full extent of the qualifying conditions list. When it comes to serious illnesses that could lead to a person’s application being approved to receive SSD benefits, the list is long. In general, the illness must be expected to last at least 12 months, or lead to the applicant’s death.

Disorders of the musculoskeletal system is one category of illnesses that may lead to a person being approved for SSD benefits. These types of illnesses typically cause some form of inflammation or degeneration of joints or bones, leading to a significant loss of function. Respiratory illnesses are also common, such as COPD. These types of illnesses leave people gasping for air at the slightest activity which, obviously, would have a serious effect on a person’s ability to work.

Cardiovascular disorders are probably some of the most common illnesses for which applicants are approved to receive Social Security Disability benefits. Many types of heart disease leave workers almost completed immobilized — obviously unable to work. And, lastly, cancer of any kind may result in an application for SSD benefits being approved if the disease has progressed significantly.

No Alabama resident ever wants to be in a position in which they need to apply for SSD benefits. But, when this situation arises, submitting a strong initial application is the key to having the best chance to be approved to receive benefits.
