HOW CAN I APPLY FOR SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME (SSI)?

If you need to file for Social Security Disability benefits under the Supplemental Security Income program (SSI), you can process your application online only if you are also filing a claim for Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB) at the same time. The online program accepts your application information, but you have 45 days from the date of the online application to contact your local Social Security office and make an appointment to complete the SSI claim either in person or on the phone.  You can process the application online if you are:

            • Between ages 18 and 65

            • Have never been married

            • Aren’t blind

• Are a US citizen residing in one of the 50 states, District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands

            • Haven’t applied for or received SSI benefits in the past.

All children’s claims are processed under SSI unless it is a Disabled Adult Child. Social Security does not yet have an online application for these claims. You can go online and complete the Child Disability Report which will help move the process along quicker, but you still must contact your local Social Security Office to set up an appointment to file the claim.

SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources, and who are ages 65 or older, blind, or disabled.

In order to complete your application you will need proof of income for members of the household, your bank statements, and information regarding any resources such as homes, land, vehicles and insurance/burial policies. This information is in addition to your medical information needed.
