A lot of our disabled clients have difficulty paying all of their expenses every month. Living is expensive and Supplemental Security Income benefits pay out a maximum of $771 per month for 2019. It can be especially hard when power bills rise right along with the south Alabama heat in the summer. But some good news is that Alabama Power offers some programs to help offset some of those costs.
Low Income Assistance Programs
Discounts are available for customers receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicaid for Low Income Families (MLIF). The discount includes $14.50 toward the customer charge and exemption from paying certain state utility license tax fees. Eligible customers can sign up at an Alabama Power business office.
Special Needs Assistance Programs
Alabama Power provides several programs for customers with special needs, including alternate payment dates for people who rely on monthly government checks. They also offer Braille and large-print bills as well as telecommunications services for the deaf.
If you qualify for one of these programs, you can sign up in person at your local Alabama Power office. In Mobile, it's located at 150 St. Joseph Street, Mobile, AL 36602. There you can get an SSI rider packet to complete and turn into the state. If you are disabled and think you qualify for one of these assistance programs, talk to an Alabama Power customer representative today.
