What veterans should know about Social Security disability

by | Jul 27, 2018 | Veterans' Issues |

It is important for veterans to understand the different disability benefits, supports and options available to them after they have served our country. One of the many veterans’ issues facing our veterans today is how to adjust to daily life following their service which can include life with a disability. It is important for veterans to know their options.

Both the VA and Social Security Administration provide resources for disabled veterans. A VA compensation rating of 100% permanent and total (P&T) disability may qualify the veteran to receive expedited processing of their application for Social Security disability (SSD) benefits. There is more for veterans to know, however, about veterans and Social Security disability because being 100% permanent and total does not necessarily qualify the veteran for SSD benefits and they must still qualify according to the eligibility requirements for SSD benefits.

These requirements include an inability to perform substantial work due to the disabling medical condition they suffer from and the medical condition must be expected to last one year or longer or result in death. Receipt of VA compensation will not negatively impact the veteran’s claim for Social Security disability benefits. Because the process of applying for SSD benefits can take some time, it is important to apply early on and provide thorough and detailed medical records concerning the veteran’s disability.

Social Security disability benefits can help with some of the day-to-day needs of veterans their families. The process of applying can sometimes be daunting which is why it helps for veterans and their families to be familiar with the options available to them and the processes for applying for the different options. Doing so can help veterans obtain the hard-earned disability benefits they may need following their service.
