Alabama's ABLE program to help those who receive SSI

For those with disabilities, they can have a tougher time financially due to their illness or injury making it difficult for them to work or make ends meet due to medical expenses or other hardship. That's why disability assistance like Supplemental Security Income exists and is distributed to the appropriate parties. However, SSI must be sought out and it can even be further optimized by other programs aimed at helping those with disabilities and their families.

Achieving a Better Life Experience or ABLE is a financial savings tool for individuals with disabilities that was launched by the state in February. According to program administrators, there has been much confusion about how ABLE works in tandem with SSI to achieve a better financial future for those who are disabled and their families. ABLE is designed to be a tax-free vehicle for saving for certain Alabamians who have disability-related expenses. ABLE accounts will assist individuals and families to save private funds without jeopardizing their public benefits like Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income.

Thousands of Mobile residents who have or are seeking SSI benefits could be taking further advantage of the financial benefits that are aimed at helping SSI recipients by putting them in a better financial situation. Even recipients of disability benefits have a hard time stretching their benefits to meet all of their financial needs. This program could make those living on Supplemental Security Income benefits more financially independent. This is turn could stop the month-to-month cycle many find themselves on.

Any opportunity that is available for disabled Mobile residents should be, at the very least, looked into. Sometimes it's about maximizing the disability benefits you are allotted to live a better life for you and your loved ones. Disability benefits like SSI can always be sought and even appealed if one feels they aren't receiving enough. However, in the meantime, one will have to get creative in making ends meet.
